A wall unit transforms a plain wall into an attractive and stylish focal point. Available in a wide range of sizes, designs and finishes, these highly functional pieces are also useful in a small space -- allowing you to consolidate your existing furniture and create a sense of space.

Measure the space where you plan to position a wall unit and note down the measurements. Whether you plan to purchase a ready-made unit or to commission one, you will need accurate measurements. Also measure the entrances into the room. This will dictate whether you need to look at options that you can assemble once the you bring the pieces into the room.

Use a wall unit as an attractive way to display accessories in a large room. In a small room, however, the unit needs to be more functional -- perhaps storing your DVD, book and music collection and larger items such as the television and stereo.

Draw a simple plan of the room. Write a list of the items you will store on your wall unit and a second list detailing the existing furniture in the room. Using these lists, ascertain if there are any items of furniture that you no longer require.

Opt for a wall unit that complements the existing decor -- if your existing furniture is modern, the wall unit should be modern. In a small room, opt for a unit without a solid back. When part of the wall is visible through the unit, the space appears larger.

Paint a small room with visually receding colors -- light shades of blue and green, white and light neutrals -- to create a sense of space. Use a semi-gloss finish to reflect light around the room and select a wall unit with a light-color finish.

Paint a large room with visually advancing colors -- reds, oranges, darker hues of blue and green and darker neutral tones -- to create a warm, cozy environment. Use a matte finish to absorb light and further reduce the sense of vast space. In a large room, the wall unit can be much darker without making the room appear small.

Cover any areas of the wall that are visible behind the wall unit with wallpaper. Wallpaper is an attractive addition if you are only displaying a few select accessories. However, if you plan to fill the units with books, paint the wall behind the shelves with a neutral color to prevent the unit from making the room appear dark and cluttered.

Experiment with the layout of accessories and items on the unit and avoid cramming them together. The same accessories can make the unit an attractive addition to the room, or turn it into an eyesore.

Tips

  • If your wall unit is purely to display accessories, pick items that complement the decor of the room, such as matching the color of the cushions.
